What's New at the MVHR?
MVHR Receives Generous Donation
The Sky Harbor Military and Veterans Hospitality Room,
located in Terminal 2, continues to receive much-needed community
support. At this year’s Phoenix Fabulous 4th festivities, held at Steele
Indian School Park, TriWest Healthcare Alliance presented a
$25,000 check to the facility. TriWest is a Phoenix-based company that
provides cost-effective health care to active and retired military
personnel and their families in 21 western U.S. states.
TriWest was asked to partner with the Military Veterans
Commission to provide funding specifically for the Military & Veterans
Hospitality Room. The company jumped at the opportunity to make its
first donation to a military organization in Arizona and has asked other
Valley corporations to get involved through a matching campaign that
will provide ongoing funding for the operation of the room at Sky
Harbor.
MVHR Celebrates First Year of Operation
On November 15, 2007, the Military & Veterans Hospitality Room
celebrated its first year of operation. Mayor Phil Gordon,
Commission Members, and former Contributors were present to mark the
occasion.
Special Ceremony Held in the MVHR
I n a ceremony that was held at the
Military & Veterans Hospitality Room on August 13 and attended by Mayor
Phil Gordon, Marine Jeremiah Dube was commissioned as an officer after
earning his bachelors degree from Arizona State University and
completing two sessions of Officer Candidates School in Quantico, Va.
The day was quite sentimental for Dube with his family and friends
around him as he was pinned by his grandfather, Ted Olloren, a 30-plus
year serviceman for the Filipino military. The ceremony occurred on the
Marine’s 28th birthday.
Second Lieutenant Dube joined the Marines immediately
following high school with a passion to be in the infantry. He was
inspired by his grandfather’s dedication to his country and commitment
to family and the decision to become a Marine was easy. He has actively
served in Iraq as a rifleman and member of a sniper unit and counts his
service there as his most rewarding achievement. Dube will now be
attending Marine flight school.
